I'd very much like an explanation as to why this topic was just deleted. I find there to be a lot of smart and interesting people on this forum and have a hard time with censorship of healthy discussion. Thanks.

It was going nowhere fast. Unfortunately I only meant to lock it, and deleted it by accident. I hadn't had my coffee yet and was typing around a very not politically correct cat walking on my keyboard that just farted right in my face.

If it is easier to blame your cat, I understand. ...but if you wouldn't mind, can you elaborate on "going nowhere fast"? I guess I'm just trying to understand the (un-written) rules a little better, so I won't go through the effort of starting any future posts that you're just going to lock/delete. Why does a General Discussion topic have to go somewhere? Do you feel civil "arguments" might somehow hurt the CCF? Thanks.

I've been doing this long enough to know that topic was about to go south.

ok. with all due respect, let's be specific here. if you don't mind:
1) what is allowed and not allowed for the General Discussion? 2) how/why do you decide to censor content that doesn't violate the posted rules?
as I am fairly new to this wonderful forum, please educate me on your un-written "rules". otherwise, one might get the wrong impression in that you are acting as a kind of Lord in deciding what type of free speech will be tolerated here and what will not.
Thanks!

First let's be clear. Playing the free speech card with me will get you absolutely nowhere. We have rules. Quote: 1) what is allowed and not allowed for the General Discussion? The rules are no different for GD.I think there are plenty of members that wouldn't want their 10 year old reading that topic. Including me. There were several Notes to Staff about the topic.

one fine dime:
I personally love a great conversation with many different points made....
I have no clue what thread you started.... but I will say this... I absolutely LOVE this forum and the general tone of most posters...
I have been a part of many other forums and found this one to be very much like a family and family orientated...
The mods here do a fantastic job in many ways and they maintain a very nice atmosphere.
There have been threads I have been part of that have in the past been deleted.. I asked why and have never received an answer... but to weigh the pros and cons... put simply it doesn't matter.. I enjoy this forum more than I care for one or two threads and why they were locked or deleted..
I guess you will now have to decide... is this place the right place for you... is this the atmosphere you enjoy... or would you prefer a more liberated forum... if so... there's other forums out there for you...

Yeah, maybe I should stick to the non-GD areas of the forum, just talking about coins. Because if we can't nurture a discussion about being sensitive to people that are different from ourselves (i.e., political correctness), and feel that is ok to share with the supposed 10 year olds that are participating in this forum (which I imagine are in an extreme minority btw), then I very much should find another forum to discuss such topics of substance.
I'd very much like to read these "Notes to Staff" as a matter of fact. Ironic isn't it how a discussion on 'political correctness' (and how we need more of it) actually offends people.
Bobby - why don't you just come right out and say what it is about that topic that offends you, or why you wouldn't want your 10 year old reading it.
AgCoinAu - thanks for your thoughts. I do like this forum very much, but I think "The staff reserves the right to remove anything we deem unacceptable" rule, is a bit disconcerting.

I'll tell you what, you can come to the next coin show where we give away literally many thousands of coins to kids and invite them to join our forum, all the while assuring their parents that they won't see anything they shouldn't. I'll reserve a spot at the giveaway table and YOU can tell these kids parents what they may or may not see.
Here's the bottom line. This is a numismatic forum. I will not lose one second of sleep over offending someone by removing posts or topics in General Discussion. Not one second. Quite frankly, I couldn't possibly care less.

Ok, fair enough bobby. I really was just trying to get a better understanding of how you operate this forum. Not trying to get into an argument. I will now eat my piece of humble pie as you've pointed out my flawed thinking on the kids issue.
Do you plan on allowing 'Your Political Standings for the 2016 US Election' to continue? I have enjoyed getting involved in some of that banter, but will likely limit my participation if you're likely to just come down at some point and hit your delete button.
Thoughts?

At the risk of stepping into something that is really not any of my business, I will relate my experience on another forum and why I would agree with Bobby on this one. I post on a financial forum, a pretty popular one. It is also pretty closely monitored. It is this way because past experience shows you what happens when it doesn't go that way. So, they will tolerate somewhat off topic posts such as "what's your favorite guitarist", but political topics are strictly off limits. Even ones that are related to finances. Why? Because they always devolve in a nasty mess that the moderators have to get involved with. So when Bobby says "I could see this one was headed south", I know exactly what he means. So the policy on this other forum is, this is a financial forum, iff you want to talk politics, go to a forum where that is ok. It's not ok there and is enforced quickly. You get to the point where you can just see the lock coming. It's that obvious. It's a much better forum with this moderation in place, believe me. So this is a coin forum, so even further removed from politics in my opinion. On both forums, I try to self moderate - i.e., do I really need to post that. Sometimes, something gets deleted - maybe something I wrote. It can be frustrating but it is really for the greater good of keeping these forums a nice place that sometimes stuff gets deleted or locked. Moderator is a hard job so better to just understand that sometimes things might not go the way you agree with. CCF is a better forum overall because of the moderation, that I am quite sure of. Just my Two Cents. Back to coins now.

If I could insert myself here and not step on anyone's toes.
Yesterday I was wondering how long that topic would last since it had the potential to get far more personal than the U.S. Election thread.
I was a member of several quasi-political forums for a few years and threads that get to a user's core beliefs are likely to devolve very rapidly into personal attacks. As far as it got the thread was very respectful but it had the potential to get ugly especially when topics like race start to be discussed.
It only takes one user trying to provoke a response to cause a lot of hurt feelings in threads like these.
Personally I have very much enjoyed these threads, especially with some opposing viewpoints, but I can understand why they cause bobby and the moderating team a lot of unease.
It is bobby131313's sandbox and we as posters just get to play in it if we follow his rules. Freedom of speech only limits the government, not private sites such as this one.

thanks Joe2007; I appreciate your thoughts. My understanding, based on what bobby131313 said above, is that some people (including himself) thought either the subject matter in general or specific content would not be appropriate for a 10 year old. [and feel free to clarify bobby131313, as I tried my best to inquire as to what specifically the issue was]
Personally, I'm not going to sugar coat America's past and present for my kids. I have two daughters (8 and 5) and they know MLK was shot "by a bad man", for example. To me, the subject matter would be great for kids to talk to their parents about (e.g., Dad, what is "bigotry"?). I wasn't trying to "provoke" anyone, my interest in starting that topic was because I personally find the most stimulating discussions do in fact "get to a user's core beliefs". What's wrong with that? As long as we refrain from getting overly defensive, refrain from personal attacks, and realize no one is saying we are flawed, just maybe our beliefs are flawed. I for one feel I have an open mind, and if someone can logically walk me to a new place (conceptually), I'm willing to alter my mindset. Maybe others are less open-minded. I don't know.

Quote: As long as we refrain from getting overly defensive, refrain from personal attacks The problem with that statement, is that you've shown you're not capable of this by saying in another thread: Quote: Kasich is clearly the only qualified republiclown up there to actually lead this great nation. That is a childish, personal attack because you're implying that someone voting Republican or who is a Republican is a clown. I don't know what thread you are talking about that was deleted, but I believe Bobby is a pretty good judge of how a thread is going to progress and, as it has been pointed out, it's his playground. Nothing more needs to be said beyond that.

I'm glad you feel you can judge and then say "nothing more needs to be said". Trust me, the tone of that other topic ('Your Political Standings for the 2016 US Election') certainly has room for the relatively playful and innocuous "Republiclown"; feel free to peruse the posts there in full, and you'll see vehement feelings towards liberals. Thanks for your thoughts.
