It is a Japanese medal commemorating the Shohondo Hall of the Taiseki-ji Temple which was built in 1972 and demolished in 1998.

Images of the temple hall may be seen here and here.

Impressive architecture.
Why was it demolished?

My guess is that an earthquake may have got at it.

The medal is now a memorial with potentially great historic acchitectural interest. May have high potential numismatic value because of this.
