Looks to be a qian yuan zhong bao. 11.8 grams and is approx 28mm in diameter. Any ideas on denomination? The weight seems a little heavy.

Well, I agree with your translation: Qian Yuan zhong bao. Issued under Tang Dynasty Emperor Su Zong. If real, the attribution is either Hartill 14.101 if the back is plain or 14.102 if there is a small crescent at about 10 o'clock. If I squint, I think I see this on your coin. The diameter should be more like 30 mm. Not sure on weight and I'm sure that one of the CCF experts on Chinese cast coins will be on to let you know about the likelihood of this being real and of which variety.

You have the attribution correct. It is an H-14.01, which is a ten-cash with a plain reverse. The diameter and weight are within tolerance. Weight and diameter vary a bit to a lot for cast cash due to how they were made, but 30mm is on the high side.

If there was a crescent on the reverse, you would not have to squint. They are VERY obvious, as obvious as the picture in Hartill.

The details and fabric of this coin look authentic, but the patina looks suspect. I do not like tan with electric blue. Could you take pictures intstead of scans? After looking through a bunch of these coins, one can see that there is a difference between a patina being "on" (applied or induced) a coin and being "a part of" (naturally-occuring) a coin. Actual pictures will help differentiate this.

I am leaning towards genuine on this one.

I greatly appreciate the replies. Here's a better look at the patina:

Tang Dynasty cash were cast in industrial quantities,
however this is a particularly attractive example, with the green patina fields and golden tone characters.

Sounds almost like a wine description, eh what?

I say genuine, but someone used a dremel tool to brush off the patina on the characters. They probably look bright/shiny copper in hand, right? Maybe not shiny, but definitely not dull.

The coin isn't currently available for me to examine, but I definitely agree. Thanks again for everyone's input.
