I was lucky to find this rare Ardashir I Kushan-shah drachm, these coins are very difficult to find in such nice of a condition. AE Drachm Ardashir I Kushan-shah circa 230-240 AD Founder of the Sassanian empire. Bust of king facing right, with legend in Pahlavi. Reverse: Goddess Anahita seated in a niche. Bactrian mint. 16.5mm x 3g x 11h Reference: Cribb 16, MACW 1264.

Thanks Nate, I usually don't buy chipped coins, but when I saw this one I jumped on it.

Nice coin, despite the chip. Any idea about the translation of the legends?

I have a copy of Cribb but it really doesn't go into detail as to the legend. It give a rough translation as "Ardashir Kushan King".

From wikipedia: Quote: ...the convergence in form of many of the characters of Book Pahlavi causes a high degree of ambiguity in most Pahlavi writing and it needs to be resolved by the context. Some mergers are restricted to particular groups of words or individual spellings. Further ambiguity is added by the fact that even outside of ligatures, the boundaries between letters are not clear, and many letters look identical to combinations of other letters. Think that I'll stick with my medieval "N" question...
