I have been finding these patches of ? on quarters . This Idaho quarter I just found and a more significant (bigger) one on a Utah quarter.

Just wondering it anyone has an Idea of what it is and how it gets there.

thanks

Struck Through Grease or crud I believe. Seems to be a common issue. I've seen it on newer dimes as well.

Grease mixed with debris like sand or grit that leaves the surface rough. But even grease can prevent a strike on the field with out the rough affect.

Even inside devices this can happen.

Great photos coop thank you I always appreciate the extra time you take to include them. I just never noticed it until a couple of week ago on a Utah quarter (which I just set aside because it was different), then only 2nd time seeing it yesterday so I figured I would inquire on it.
