I was browsing the other day and made this purchase. I'm still on the fence if this is a good strike or not. It looks better than a lot of them but the luster on the back looks a little odd but maybe that's the picture. What grade do you think this is and how is the strike? I either made a pretty decent purchase or a really bad one. Looking forward to opinions.. I won't have it for a few days. Thanks! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I'm going with au58. Nice coin. What's it say on the label?

Strike is average both obverse and reverse. Luster is bright but broken, so I'd be in the high AU range. Probably a 58. Take your grade, look up completed (or sold) lots on ebay, you will know exactly if you bought at the low end or the high end for the grade.

Disappointing.. I guess I just don't understand grading very well still. You guys were right AU58. Unfortunately it's an ANACS so that takes it down a notch IMO. I paid $50 below PCGS value for the same grade.. looking at completed auctions it still seems like an OK price but I should have saved my money to put toward a higher grade example. Oh well.. Why are these AU58 but look a lot worse? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-High-R...047675.l2557http://www.ebay.com/itm/1921-Peace-...AOSwv0tVc2bw (this one looks awful IMO)

Those coins look a lot worse than your coin because they do not have nice eye appeal, but technically grade at AU 58. Eye appeal attracts buyers and will often sell for more money.

I think I saw the good eye appeal and for whatever reason it made me think the strike was better than it really was. I would have been better suited to put that money toward a higher grade coin but I certainly could have done worse for the price. I paid $5 more than the bad example I showed you above. It bugs me a little that it's in an ANACS holder since I usually only buy PCGS/NGC but since everyone has posted they thought it was an AU-58, maybe ANACS got the grade right on this one. It's not worth the price to cross it over and I'm certainly not taking it out of the holder so I guess it will stay an ANACS!

You did just fine. Plus, and a very Important plus in my opinion, you've learned a great deal by the experience of purchasing this coin and the questions you've asked.
I have quite a few ANACS myself because I loved the coin. I have an AU-50 Mercury 1942 over 41 overdate that has an amazing real red, not AT, toning. When I was looking for one I also wanted NGC or PCGS but when I spotted that correctly graded sensational beauty I grabbed it.
I wanted a 55 or 58, and it was "only" a 50 but I couldn't resist it.
Love your coins and learn as you go. We all should.

I think it's better than average strike. As you see more of them you'll find better strikes. But you'll also see a ton of MS65's that are as flat as a pancake. This is the highest contrast photo I can find to show the ideal, which is still not as well struck as an average 1925-P. Look at the hair detail away from the center of the coin...then compare with the lack of detail in the center...and this is about as good as it gets on a 1921... http://d3jsg6v4h2swe0.cloudfront.ne...1.jpg?867006

Strike is above average and the coin appears to be dipped and perhaps not adequately rinsed on the obverse. Let's hope the whitish spots on the obverse are not on the coin. Eye appeal is average (with the spots) and the luster is good. Surface preservation appears to be AU+. The coin looks to be worth all of Numismedia's Wholesale Value of $155.
