Hi Kid,

I would recommend that you purchase a Rennick's book on Australian coins. Its loaded with information that will help you get started as well as maintain a direction in your endevor to collect Australian coins. Good Luck

Rennicks Australian Coins and Banknotes Values and Greg McDonald's Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes are two excellent affordable books recommended for anyone wishing to collect Aussie issues. If you wait another month or so, the new editions will be out.

The only Aussie minted coins in the pre 1900 era are our gold sovereigns and half sovereigns and they are not cheap in collectable grades.

Rennicks and Maccas are retailing around the AUD$30.00 mark...

Seriously, you gotta understand that Australia used to be a British colony and there is no way you can find a pre 1800 Aussie coins for dirt cheap. Afterall, the British came to Australia around 1770. Really early coins would either be some Spanish reals which was modified to make holey dump coins, i.e. holed which was then countermark / overstriked or alternatively foreign coins that were brought from overseas. Such holey & dump coins are very very VERY expensive - the last time I saw it, I saw it in a coin fair here in Australia and I didn't dare to ask the price... as the figure was at least 5 digits...

Here might be a useful link of early aussie coins: http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin...earlyaus.htm

You can check the rest of the Aussie coins on the same site: http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin-web/

And yes, the only collectable coins that are reasonably or dirt cheap are the copper pennies... good luck.
