So I have collected pennies since I was young but never took a serious approach with it. I Just recently began penny roll hunting and searching for any king of rare penny.

So I was looking for some wheat pennies I found and found them I had 2 1952 D wheat pennies. When you look at them both there is a noticable difference one d is higher than the other, possible error?

The locations of the mint marks will vary as they a set by hand into the die with a mint mark punch. This is hit several times to make the mark into the die. When it is ready to be used the mint marks will vary in locations and mint mark strength depending on how deep the punch was hammered into the die. Some years they used different punches that were different shapes. (1946 had three different punches used that year) Sometimes the punch would get damaged and they looked a bit different because of that damage on the punch. (1979-D cents had many dies that were punched with a damaged punch. They looked like a RPM, but they were found on different denominations and dies that year. Thus making them a common event.

I assume then that there is no premium on these. I have never seen one that high either. I know they move around slightly, but this one Coinedtheterm posted looks like its touching the 5. Thanks Coop. Have learned a ton so far from your responses and pictures.
Rest in Peace

Not an example that would merit additional value. However, since you are seeing this difference it is likely you will find others that do have added value.

They can vary quite a bit in location. They should be under the date area, to the right of the bust and not touching the outside edge of the die.

Sometimes the mint mark might be angled.

But unless it is a RPM, there is no extra premium for these. (the first one is a RPM)
Sometimes they can even fall in wrong locations:

This one the location was to high.

This one the punch missed the previous location:

Sometimes they miss the location several times:

When these last three events happen, then they are collectable as RPMs.

But on your coin, because they were punched by hand just alter locations of the mint marks.
