I recently bought some Mexican coins on ebay. Nothing expensive but they looked pretty good and the price was right. I paid using paypal within minutes of the close of the auction (18 Jan). The coins showed up on Friday (8 Feb). I had contacted the seller about a week after the auction closed to check on shipping status and he told me that the coins weren't in stock and he was waiting to get more. Sounded a little weird to me but rather than make a big deal of it, I waited. And waited. Most other sellers I've purchased from ship within a day or two and I get the coins within a week.

So here's my first question: Is it ethical to sell something you don't have?

I gave him positive feedback but mentioned that the shipping was slow. He nailed me on my feedback. He said that I didn't read the ad and was not truthful on feedback. Is this common and should I worry about it?

Sounds fishy to say the least. If he was selling them on consignment or something it sounds possible he may not have had them in his possesion for some reason, but by the way you worded it... waiting to get "more" it sounds like he's selling something other than what's pictured in the auction and that's against policy. As far as the shipping was concerned, did he say something in the auction bout how long it would take?

He did use stock photos in his auction. If I had read the recent thread on that in this forum before bidding I might have went to another seller. I just checked out his past negative and neutral feedback on toolhaus - something I also would have done sooner if I had known about it. It seems like he's got a habit of slow shipping and harsh response to criticism. Off to the discouraged sellers list....

Here's his response to my query about his feedback:

quote:
Hello,Sorry you feel that way but 21 days is not a month and I did explain that I was waiting on better coins to arrive. Each of the coins I sent were uncirculated and worth far more per coin than you paid for the whole lot,I would have sooner you returned them. My ad states that I will send what I have available at the time and for the price of less than a soda you got some great coins and are not happy. Think about this,I sent you coins that I lost money on and did not mind then you slap me in the face for it. Yours deleted

It is interesting that he seems to be selling things he doesn't have - and not on commission. The coins were cheap (99 cents), the shipping was high ($5) but everything came well packed so I didn't complain about that.

For the record, I never said a month (I said almost). And the coins he sent were not uncirculated; the best was AU and the worst F.

Well, I'm not out too much cash and it was a good learning experience.

Easy responses to this...

1) Dont ever buy from him again
2) Let us know his seller id so we can avoid him too :)
3) If you feel like it's warranted, set up a fake new ebay ID or two, and win his auctions and leave him a negative right away (payback is a you know what)

It sounds like this seller is deserving of #3 based on his practices
