Good info Slamnbass, now that you mention it I remember hearing something similar with half dollars. That makes this seem likely to be legit.

Ive looked everywhere for my scale and I cant find it, so I'm going to head over to my local coin shop tomorrow to see if they can weigh it for me, sorry to keep everyone on edge!

Bluesolo: yeah I totally agree, I had to get one of the early generation z's if I was going to get one at all, I hate that t-top, and the dimensions are all off

The weight will be very telling:
Mint spec for cupro-nickel: 2.268 g
Silver dime spec: 2.5 g

Hoping yours matches up close with the ladder

Im curious if aluminum is a possibility? It feels a bit lighter than a CuNi dime I have on hand

Try the tissue test to see if the color proves true with a silver coin, this coin and a circulated clad dime to see if that helps. The only cost is a single layer tissue:

The OP's coin looks like it was dipped in acid, which would lighten the coin.

I used really thick paper towel here so its pretty much impossible to see the cuni dime, but my dime is a pretty visible white under there...

Coop, I see what you mean when you say it looks like it was dipped in acid, but the texture you see on there is grain from the flash of the camera on the phone. The actual coin looks like a normal circ silver dime

All of the details look a little 'mushy' to me.
Thick silver plating could bring it up to near the correct weight for a silver dime.

Are you sure it is not a silver plated coin? (look between the reeds on the edge of the coin) If not then you might have something there.

Here it is compared to a (more worn) regular silver dime, the last picture is at an angle, and it shows that it's probably not natural luster.

I've checked between the reeding, but its difficult to tell to be honest with you, it looks no darker than the real silver dime I have with me, some parts look perfectly white, other look like they might have some dark spots

Right now I'm 95% sure its been plated, but the weight test will tell us for sure. At the very lease it's been polished, which doesn't look good for its chances

Again sorry about the photos, the camera and lighting is about as far from ideal as you can get

To me the color of the 1966 looks like a clad coin.

I agree with you coop, it does look like a clad coin, at least in the photos. in hand it looks like it could be either depending on which way the light hits it, again when I first saw it on the roll end it hit me as most likely silver before even seeing the date. I'm still leaning towards plated. Looking at it now I think I see breaks in the plating on the high points.

Im excited to head down to the coin shop to put a nail in the coffin, ill be happy to have found this either way though

After the test of weight. If that doesn't supply any info you can try the exacto-knife test. Use an exacto-knife/single edge razor to try to cut into a reed. Then examine with loupe
