Keep in mind the shape of the die. The devices are incuse into the die. The fields are the outside edges of the die. When polishing happens, most of the brunt in on the fields. (there area affected by die contact/die clashes/ handling of the dies) then it is polished with a lot of pressure it will remove parts of the devices. If they get polished in the center of the devices it will make one area deeper than the centers of the devices. With some much of the area in the center of the motto close to each other, it will remove part of the center quicker. When this happens, then the height of the centers of these devices will be thinned. Making the fields closer to that area and the tops and bottoms of the devices are still deeper. Thus the center of these devices look different. This happened a lot on the 1980's zincolns.
