Before bidding on the auction I googled these and found references to these being the only one minted during the USSR periode, and that they usually went for quite a lot of money. But it seems quite hard to find much about them.

I purchased mine ungraded from a known auction house. So the link above is as example. Mine is to be sent for conservation and grading.

Well, the set together weighs ~ 26.44 grams (about 85% of one troy ounce).

"Was this a good purchase, or did I just buy bullion?"

You DID buy bullion, but if it was a good purchase depends on additional information.

How much did you pay?

How do you define "good purchase"?

Why is it bullion then? As far as I can find some places says its not considered that, and auction sites reveal other prices.
Rest in Peace

That set is certainly more than just bullion.

If you paid anywhere between 120-140% of spot, you still have enough left to send the three in to a TPG and still have a nice set at a good price.

Close to double spot is probably the most common price these sell for as a set if they are "loose" but unimpaired.

Its bought from Great collections, so I assume they stand behinde it - that means they wouldn't auction of if reason to belive otherwise, and it comes with certificate (if that counts).
But I partially think I sniped it from another person not looking, because I placed my bid when 60 seconds to go in front of some 30 other people bidding..

Any solid slab of precious metal can fairly be called bullion.

If you buy a COIN for just its precious metal value, what are you buying if not bullion?

If you pay more than the precious metal value, then you are attaching a premium to the COIN for whatever reason (beauty, rarity, demand, resale prospect, etc.).

You did not answer how you define "good purchase".

In the example, they are ASKING $3,780.00 for .85 ounce of gold. The precious metal value is $1,071 (at the moment I type this). If you paid, say, $1,400, then you paid more than the precious metal value, but less than what that seller is ASKING. You may have paid just 37% of what a seller is asking.

Does that make it a "good purchase"?
