If you wanted to buy a $10 gold Indian just to have that type in your collection would you spend say $100 or so extra dollars to by an MS62 graded coin versus a XF to AU ungraded coin?

I would not, only because buying the coin means I was crazy enough to add the gold page to my 7070. That coin would fill a hole. But that is me.

Do you prefer the slabbed coins or raw ones for your collection? I think that would be the primary factor in the decision.

Get the graded coin. Also, save for a common date in 63 as the 62 would probably show a trace of wear.

to have a nice looking uncirculated example is much better than an EF-AU example for a difference of $100 is IMO a good move. you will be happier with it and you will be able to get more out of it when it comes time to sell.

How do you keep your coins, especially the raw ones? Do you foresee upgrading some of the raw coins or getting them graded in the future?

If your goal is to eventually have all graded coins, then I suggest you go ahead and get the graded coin now. If you are cracking coins for albums, then skip the step and buy something raw.

I really do not like upgrades if I can avoid it, I play for keeps. If you have time to do it twice, you have time to do it right the first time.

Agree with jbuck. Buy a nice graded 63 with sharp luster the first time and hang on to it. It will look great in the holder.

Dang....a year ago one of the big metals houses was blowing out NGC AU58 $10 Indian common dates for just over $700. You could pick and choose among a couple dozen well-photographed coins. It'll probably happen again if you wait.

did pick up a MS63 PCGS today. With the 5X ebay bucks promotion the net cost was just under $800.

If it only costs you $100 to buy a Mint State PCGS or NGC graded $10 Indian I'd do it a New York minute. The graded coins are easier to sell, and you don't have worry nearly as much about counterfeits. The grading services also have your back if a counterfeit gets into one of their holders.

Do yourself a favor and check the serial number on the slab before you buy to make sure that the slab and the coin are genuine. I've been working on a presentation to my local club on this topic.

I have few $10 Indians because when I upgraded for my type set I decided not to sell the coins that were displaced. Here is a piece I've owned for about 35 years which I had graded by NGC. It is an MS-63.

@billjones nice coin! I like the full breast feathers and absence of marks in the fields.
