This 1953 Canada 5 cents piece was in the reject slot @ the Coinstar coin counting machine earlier this week. I get a lot of Canadian small cents from there sometimes, but this is the first 5 cents.

It's got a weird look to it, almost as though it was plated at some point, or blue/chrome look, that has worn off in places.

Information on a variety / type or other useful tidbits would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Due to the Korean War Nickel blanks were not available for coins.
Your 1953 is chrome plated steel.
It is the No Shoulder Fold,Far Leaf variety.
This is the most common variety.
A pleasantly surprising but not rare CRH find.

All 5 cents of this year were Chrome plated (missing chrome plating is an error). This is typical for the circulated chrome-plated Canadian 5 cent. The chromium starts to wear off at the high points and exposes the iron, which then starts to rust.

This by itself is not a variety.
