Hiya everybody!

To make a long, boring story short and sweet, I just decided to start collecting Canadian Cents and Nickels and I have a couple newbie questions for yous. For now I'm going to focus on Elizabeth coins, so not need to go into the older stuff. I basically know nothing, so try not to laugh too hard at some of my ridiculas questions...

What dates should I be looking for as the Keys and Semi-Keys of both sets? There are no mint-marks, right? All the coins are from where? Ottawa? Is there a nice, dependable whitman album (or any other company forthat matter) or should I stick with 2X2s and a binder? Are there any informative websites out there that will be instructive and useful for me as I began to explore this 'new' currency? Any general pointers, tips, or advice?

thanks for any and all help you can provide,
--Gary

Hey,
If you don't have these books already, I'd suggest either Charlton's Catalogue or Pierre Charest's "Canadian Coins and their varieties". The last book details the varieties the best. I also have a bunch of Elizabeth cents from 53-64 if you'd like to trade for something. No keys, but it might be a good start.

Hey Kurt,

I don't have either book, but i'll definitely pick one up next month (lost this months coin money on the Super Bowl)

I don't have much to offer besides common wheaties and early Jeffersons. If you're interested shoot me an email and we'll work something out. Same deal goes for anyone else looking to dump some Canadians and gain some Wheats/Jeffersons.

When you're done with Kurt, feel free to drop me an email. He's probably got more than I do anyway, but you'll find us Canadians to be glad to help get our coinage south of the border!

As for key QEII cents? Look for the 2006P. They go for as much as $250/roll! Another hard one to get (if you're into varieties) is the 1985 pointed 5. For the WEII nickels, you'll want to find the 1964 with an extra water line. (1964XWL) I'm still looking for my first one.

check your emails :)

Okay, question for a smart person out there--what the heck is "sf" and "nsf"? I hear its "shoulder-fold" but what does that mean and how common are these to be found?

Check the Canadian forums. There have been a few threads recently covering the SF and NSF varieties. They all date between 1953-1955, some a much harder to find than others. I would just get one of each date to start with, and then you can learn about the varieties and try to fill in the missing ones. Same goes for the 4 varieties of the 1965. Three of them are relatively easy to find, the 4th one is the one you will need to go out of your way to find.

Gary, be prepared to scratch you head, trying to decide whether it is "pointing at, or between"!! You will find a little of both, as well as some that actually do point "to", or " between" the denticles. Yes, I'm new to them too,,and understand your questions. If you are close to the CAnadian border, you can go over there and get a box of circulated coins, but if you are like me "on the US Southern BORDER', you will have to get someone to swap rolls with you. that is what I am doing. We swap roll-for-roll, and "eat" the S&H, on each end. Delivery time is about a week, or ten days. Hope this helps

Thats a good idea Dick, hadn't thought of a trade that simple and obvious haha If anyone up in Canada wants to swap a few rolls shoot me a message and we'll hammer it out.

Those denticles! I've been reading (well trying to) about them on the forum the last few days and I must say that it seems very challenging, frustrating, and fun all at once. Once I build up a nice stock pile of common cents (no pun intended) I'm gonna go after them...I think I'm gonna do the same with the SF/NSF, like topher said. Start with the basic, graduate to the intermediate :)

Yeah, keep an eye out for those '49 ATs! It seems that Krause fails to mention the variety, despite its scarcity and worth. Many dealers seem to overlook it, and some areas seem to have a "hot spot" of this variety, for reasons unknown! I have found 10 in my area.

Topher, you refer to the steel "P", rather than the "zinc" no "P", I take it. IO just finished goimng thru several tubes of 2006 cents, and found each category represented except the steel "P". makes for an interesting search. A good magnet will speed things up! If it don't hang, toss it. If it does hang, check the MM. It will be a "P", or a RCM logo MM. If everything is MS-65, or better, don't bother looking, just stash all of them. Why? They all have the same premiun at MS-65.

Gary, the 49 ATs are around $30 in VF and $50 in XF. They're quite rare, but I've managed to pick up a few for .25 each.

Yes, Dick. Thanks for the clarification. I mean the 2006 "magnetic P" variety.

Are the 2006P rolls worth $250 only in MS?

That's what a dealer is charging for them, and even then, it's only one variety of 2006P. You'd probably never get that kind of money trying to sell them yourself. There are both magnetic and non-magnetic 2006P cents. As if we don't have enough varieties going on now as it is!
