I'm kind of new to roll buying. Can you suggest what denominations you've had the best luck with ? I went to the bank today for $300 worth of halves. So far all Kennedys, but no silver or silver-clad dates yet. I would love to find some Franklins or Eisenhowers if I only new what to ask for at the bank.
Thanks, Laura

Kennedys tend to yield the most silvers, though at times it can be frusrating. Its not all that uncommon to go through $1000+ before getting one, though they are out there still. I got a 1965 today (AU at that) to complete my silver Kennedys.
I usually search Nickels and tend to find on average 30 pre-1960 per $100, including 1 silver nickel. Pennies usually yield a dozen or so wheats a box. Dimes and Quarters are a waste of time if looking for silver. If you need to fill up your clad-quarter/dime books, buy a book--you should be able to find several examples of post-64s in there.

I've gone through a boatload of pennies, by far the most fun. I did search my first $500 box of halves and got skunked, going to order another tommorow. I say go for what your after. If you need to fill some holes, hit up some pennies etc...same with halves. I'm working on a halves set now, got a long, long way to go.

I have done 2 boxes of halves, with only 3 40% silvers in the bunch, and 6 NIFC. I have also done 4 boxes of pennies with roughly 40 wheats out of that but nothing else of note. It's a numbers game with luck thrown in, so dont get frustrated if you dont find alot on your first few tries. Persistence should pay off. Good luck!

I've gone through pennies, nickels and quarters. Pennies have been the most fun and I ask for a box everytime I'm at the bank. Nickels probably had the best yield (a few silver War Nickels) for me. I ask for halves and nobody around me has them and they all say they can't order them. Most likely, they just don't want to do it! I have a big bag of searched coins to return to the bank tomorrow. I'm thinking two boxes of pennies would keep my busy for a few days!

Pennies are most fun to me when just trying to fill in coin folders, nickels can also be considerably fun.

Ahhhhh....... I think back to that estate auction I went to last summer ! I bought 1,000 unsearched Wheaties for $50.00........AND THERE WERE ALOT OF GOODIES ! All decades found ! Rolls searched for me though, it's been halves. And I've found 53 silver pieces I think. I believe 12 ore 13 90% silvers out of that. I have not participated in the other denominations yet. More obvious silver weight and value to the halves so I started there. Now I've emptied out my town of silver and will have to oder Fed Res. boxes like others. Motivation and extra time seem to be an issue for me on pennies, nickles, or dimes......but I do intend to persue them too.

If you're looking to fill albums, getting a few boxes of the denomination you want to complete should get you alot of the coins to do it. If you're looking at hoarding silver, then your best bet is to buy and search through alot of halves. It's a numbers game, so of course the more you sort, the more you will find. If you're wanting to hoard copper, that's probably the toughest thing to do because of the number of coins you have to look through and keep in order to make it worthwhile. Some guys use a sorting machine called a Ryedale that can sort copper pennies from zinc pennies but that one runs $350 or more. You would have to sort and sell alot of coins to pay that off. :)

Thanks everyone ! I have my office table set up to do all the searching. Lamp, magnifiers, list of dates (Key Dates highlighted), dump bucket (a tupperware), and of course my 2008 Red Book and assorted other Whitman Guides. Right now, I'm going through the last of my $300 worth of halves. I believe for now, I will concentrate on the halves. I haven't found any silver or S mint marks yet, but I am keeping an eye out for any coin that comes close to or is BU. I would like to eventually collect enough to build a book, and then make rolls out of the others. I'm trying hard not to keep any coins with heavy marks or Slot machine damage. I will let you know what I find and if I may, I'de like to post some of the nice ones for ya'll to see. Do the tellers at the bank ever give you problems when you cash in rolls and rolls of halves for paper money? I'de like to know because I plan to use one bank as my "dump bank" and purchase coins at other banks. ... but, I wonder if the "dump bank" will get upset with me dumping $500 of halves every couple of weeks. Please give me some of you ideas or experiences. Thanks, Laura

Laura,
I would say your best bet is to have a inside man at a bank. For me, it is one of my friends. She knows that I collect coins and she doesn't know that much but she sets aside what ever she comes across or she buys and I buy it from her. I rarely do the bank thing because I have a complete collection of wheat back pennies and almost a second one except for some key dates. I am missing a few nickels so maybe I will get a box of nickels.
Good luck!

Note where you live could make a difference in roll or bag searching. For example if you live in a smaller community, many of the coins are recirculated from person to bank to person to bank. In other words you could be looking at the same coins over and over and over and...... Now if you live in a large city area, the chances that you would find something of value are much, much better. There the coins are distributed over a massive area continuously. If your in a large city where crime is rampant you may find numerous valuable coins in rolls from the bank due to coin robberies where the crimials just spend what they steal. I suggest for the most fun, best rewards go to the oldest looking banks and request a $50 bag of pennies.
