I saw this 1876 Trade dollar on ebay. This coin certainly saw its away around the Orient.

Wow! They were not nice to that coin. Looks like a hole was punched through it also.

I would be leery of that piece. What are the chances that all those Chinese merchants made sure the obverse was up before they stamped it and the reverse only saw a couple of counter stamps?

Yeah, there isn't any sign of circulation wear to say so for a coin that is supposedly well traveled.

I was thinking the exact same thing, especially since I see not-silver stuff at the bottom of the square punches.

They might if they recognized that particular merchants chop. If they didn't they would check it out and add their own. If the next guy didn't recognize those chops he adds a third and so on.
