Have you seen one like it before? Lots of obvious plugging on the date area.

No one seems to recognize it. Maybe I've not seen enough of this dated half. The reverse is unusual and there should be others out there like this.

It is a bit of a grainy photo but is this perhaps a counterfeit?

That indeed is a very unusual one. Glancing at 1938 Zoell varieties, I notice only a couple of known die cracks on the reverse but nothing relative to extra metal One of our members - pginrh - has invested considerable time and energy into study of King George VI 50c and I'm sure he'd have something knowledgable to say however over the recent past he's had some computer issues. Hopefully that'll soon be resolved or in the meantime someone else might be able to chime in.

Yes I notice the Unicorn's right leg is totally severed, behind the bottom portion of the flagpole.

Odd that such a relatively common coin would be selected by counterfeiters. Maybe a trial run?

What other markers do you notice?

Coin looks like it was "cast", rather than struck by dies.

Yikes! It is a counterfeit! I just weighed it and it comes in at 9 grams. Regular issue is around 11.7 grams. The obverse looks so convincing. Probably a VF-20. But the reverse has that cast look. I never put two and two together. I got it in a bulk group of George VI halves. It looks nothing like the Chinese fakes. Must have been some domestic garage pounder.

Very interesting, I've never seen an early King George VI 50c counterfeit before, photo or otherwise. Indeed I hope you'll send this example to nickelsguy, a CCF expert of many things.

Yeah send it over to nickelsguy. It's no good for anything, either you toss it in the garbage or you send it to an expert in counterfeits that will appreciate it!
