Hello guys , Sorry I haven't been on of late , I'm pretty old and took a turn for a bit sorry about that.

I would like to ask how can I tell the difference in a standard date and wide date penny.

I was going through my 22s and I found 2 of those toenail 9 wide dates but I don't no how to tell the normal wide date. Is it the gap between the 1 and the 9 or the height.?

Thank you very much in advance.

I've just checked some of mine. The date itself appears to be the same width on all figures on both types except the 9 which appears to be tilted to the right, also the wide date is slightly thinner. These two differences give the appearance of being wider, which is quite noticeable to the naked eye.

Have done some work on these over a few years. Basically, the 1922 penny can be sorted into 5 main groups. When looking at coins from all groups, the position of the second 2 is the key. Based on all examples identified so far, a quick check on the alignment between the left edge of the foot on the second 2 and the dentil below is all that's required for confirmation of which group the coin belongs.

Within some of these groups there are also multiple variations of the 9 and first 2, as well as flat or curved base reverse lettering and London and Indian obverses, but just concentrating on the individual groups and the last 2 here.

BTW the denticle numbering is counted to the right from the 1.

For group 1, common width date coins, the second 2 aligns with the centre of dentil fifteen. (Common left tilted 9)

For group 2, common width date coins, the second 2 also aligns with the centre of dentil fifteen. (Extremely Scarce upright 9)

For group 3, narrow width date coins, the second 2 aligns with the left edge of dentil fifteen. (Very scarce upright 9)

For group 4, wide date coins, the second 2 aligns with the right edge of dentil fifteen. Includes the spike on tail of 9 version. (Scarcer upright 9)

For group 5, extra wide date coins, the second 2 aligns with the left edge of dentil sixteen. Includes the spike on tail of 9 version. (Scarcer upright 9)

I know a picture is better than a thousand words, so happy to try and post some pics of groups 1 to 5 if needed.
