It's been awhile since I've posted. I've mostly been focused on getting the American Silver Eagle dates (yes, I know--modern coin, wrong forum) but...

one coin I've wanted to pick up for awhile is a really nice Flying Eagle cent. I took a quick look at some of the usual online dealers that show prices $100-$900 for better quality/grades.

Since these coins aren't my area of expertise---I'm looking for guidance from the community on what price range is reasonable?

I don't mind a little wear on the coins as long as:
1. I can see the date & words clearly
2. Would like to have a good amount of detail on the eagle itself

Thanks for your guidance!!

I think you will be quite happy with a VF/XF coin, and that will set you back $100 +/- -- this guide is pretty much retail pricing: http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...icesgd.shtml

What does that get you? These images from PCGS' online photograde show their image for VF25:

Don't be afraid to look at circulated certified FE's, either. There have been fairly good copies of the Flying Eagle cents around forever. They can be spotted on ebay from time to time.

It usually won't cost much difference at all to get a VF-25 to VF-35 encapsulated example and you can be sure you are getting what you are paying for.

Agreed. There are always tons for sale - it's value lies in its status as a type coin. Don't be in a hurry.

If you wait for the right coins priced fairly, you might be able to put together a 3 piece set (1857, 1858LL, 1858SL) for not too far north of $100. I think I ended up around $130 for 3 coins in high VF maybe XF. It's a three coin set that is riddled with cool varieties from doubled dies to off-denomination die clashes. I'd pay the money for a good guidebook.

Unless you can see it in person or have a good grading eye, I'd also recommend a slabbed example. That way you won't get a details coin.
