The following is a release from Legend Auctions - Legend Rare Coin Auctions today announced the consignment of the extremely rare 1879 Pattern $20 Judd-1643, popularly known among numismatists as a "Quintuple Stella." One of only a small number struck there are currently only five accounted for, including one that is ensconced in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. This major, seven-figure rarity has an insurance value of $2,000,000.
The specimen that will be offered in the Legend Rare Coin Auction Regency XVII Sale on May 19 in New Orleans, is the well pedigreed Virgil Brand-Amon Carter-Ed Trompeter-Bob R. Simpson Duplicate, currently graded PR64 Deep Cameo by PCGS, and is second finest behind a coin graded PR64+ Deep Cameo. It is amazing that three of the owners of this specimen owned duplicates of this major rarity; Virgil Brand owned three examples, Ed Trompeter owned two, and Bob Simposon is retaining the superb PCGS PR64+ DCAM for his collection. Each example of the Quintuple Stella has been in the collection of the most famous of all numismatists: Garrett owned one, Wilkison owned one, King Farouk owned one, and Louis Eliasberg owned one. Now is your opportunity to own one. The mirrors are bold and reflective, with stunning black and white contrast and very pleasing orange peel surfaces. A very few light hairlines account for the assigned grade, but can be overlooked.
