I am looking at some zinc cents and about 1/3 of them have wear in the same spot of the reverse. In States the bottom half of STA are almost gone, as well as the E in E. pluribus unum.
Is that just a bad spot in all these coins or a die error?

That area is opposite the base of the bust on the obv. The bust requires a lot of metal to fill and often results in poor filling of the lettering on the reverse.

Wolfman, if ya haven't researched the minting processes, I suggest that ya do. I only recently have and its sweet, very surprising. I had no clue.

I have noticed that zinc cents both Canadian and US are of poor quality. Recently I have been taking more time to examine them before I throw them in the togo pile.
It seems that a poor quality planchet is the main reason. If the minting process is causing this flaw, I suppose that doesn't count as an error or variety then? I have seen this on 1983 as well.
