Hi everyone,

I was wondering if this was a 50 cash coin or something else. I do not collect Chinese coins so I was wondering what it is and what value it might have.

Weight: 22.4 grams
Diameter: 37 mm

Can anyone share some information on this coin?

Best regards from Berlin

Just to add a little additional detail: Attribution is Hartill #22.754. Minted under the authority of Emperor Wen Zhong (1851-61), but this 10 cash coin was made between June 1853 and February 1854.

Thanks for the information. Meanwhile, I looked the coin up but I was curious that mine is heavier than most other coins of that type. Is that normal for Chinese coins from that period of time?

Ah good point. Hartill says mass should be 18-20 g. Yours is 10% over. Last time I posted on a thread that it seems like all cast Chines coins are fakes now, I got beaten up pretty good, so I wont hazard a guess why your coin might be overweight.

Well regarding the value of the coin and what I paid for the lot I still would consider myself lucky if this one would be a counterfeit.

I bought a lot of 8 coins for 50 € and the lot included some nice, without any doubt authentic pieces in very nice condition:
- 1 Markka 1865 Finland
- 3.6 Candareens 1899 Po Kien Province
- 20 Sen 1899 Japan
- 3 x 1 Pesa 1890 German East Africa
- 1 random worn Chinese copper coin

That is why this 10 Cash will rest in my counterfeit box now :)

Best regards from Berlin

I think this coin is genuine. Value is about $20-30, so counterfeiters would not waste their time making this one look as genuine as it does. There was not much quality control when it came to the weights of the cash coins. I have handled some that were 25-50% off the normal weight, but they are genuine because they came from a known hoard.
