Could somebody in the Forum be so nice and give his expert opinion about what really could happened with this 2003 curious bimetallic 500 pesos Guacari Colombian coin ? .as you can appreciate , the outer part of the coin , that one that is made as an alloy of copper-nickel-zinc , seems - in both sides of the coin- corrugated as the surface of a sandpaper .Was this created in the mint or after mint ?...and in any case...how ? Thanks a lot !

My best guess is that it was placed in some acid, after minting, or possible squashed on some coarse grit.

People do all sorts of things to coins after they are minted.

Hi Oriole: thanks for your opinion !...Yes, I was also thinking about some kind of acid ,but I wonder, why the aluminium-bronze of the center of the coin looks unaltered ?...What I have to tell you is that this special coin, that is the Guacari coin , general speaking, is a mine for rare things ,strange things and a lot of all kind of errors.Look this one that I founded yesterday , where the date is almost disappeared - I suppose there was a lot of grease on the die ,but the experts have the last word .....

Your last picture:

It looks like the coins was very weakly struck, especially near the date, so that it did come through on the striking.

I do not think that it is grease, since it is too regular. Grease strikes usually show up as a patch on the coin.

It is fun to look at all these coin mistakes!

The first coin does look like environmental corrosion to me - either a weak acid/alkali of some kind, or perhaps simply sitting at the bottom of a chlorinated swimming pool or fountain for a while.
