I'm new at this so bear with me. I don't remember where I picked up this coin. I've looked for photos of it on the web, but mine has something that is not on the ones I've seen. At the bottom of the reverse is the date 2003. The images here are from the internet and don't have the date but are otherwise identical to the one I have. Anyone have any information or even good guesses?

First, welcome to the forum.

Next, you have a here a guardian angel token. There are numerable varieties. As far as I know, none have any numismatic value. I suppose that some might be made in silver, but yours has the appearance of being steel (checking to see if it is attracted to a magnet would be a good start.)

I don't see the 2003 date, but this might very well be the date of the copyrighting of the design as opposed to the date that this token was made.

I've had a few of these over the years and they go into my "junk" token bag. I've tried selling them without a single bite. Once had about a dozen different with an opening bid of $5 and couldn't get that.

Google angel coins or tokens, you will get more things to read and places to buy them. As to why people buy them and give them out as a statement of faith. to give somebody that may be having problems or feel down a little pick me up. One of the forever begging charities in Gods name you never heard of sends a version out on occasions. With their request for money. Sunday schools give them out, other programs, speakers give them out. Like Moxking said they aren't worth much I generally find them in .50/25 bins or they are fillers in bagged lots. anybody that can afford to have a design made and then tokens minted can do them. Googles has pages of images.
Here is a Sterling silver version

Thanks to all who replied, but I still don't know why the coin I have has a date on it.

spence: It's a 260 alloy, consisting of 70% copper and 30% zinc, wih a nickel coating. The photos are not of the coin I have. Every one I've seen online have no date.

moxking: I'll take your comment under advisement. I did find several websites that say "Minted on a press originally from the Philadelphia Mint (USA) they are of exceptional quality, with lots of details. They look and feel like proper coins."

Circus: I have one of the tokens like your photo. This is a very different coin.

And so the search goes on. I suppose the next move is to contact AngelStar and see if they can explain it.javascript:insertsmilie('')
