Hello, and thank you in advance for your help.

I was refered to this forum through a link from http://www.arstechnica.com, and I hope my question is appropriate.

I recently inherited a little under 6lbs of 90% silver coins. My wife and I went through and did a hand count to try and figure out what we got (results included below). Based on that hand count, and the 90% silver coin prices listed at http://www.Deleted4.com/silver_coin_values.html I posted an auction on ebay with a reserve price of $1,100. The high bid was only $787 and I'm trying to figure out why - It seems like the coins are worth more then that. If these were your coins, where would you try to sell them - and what would you consider to be a fair value?

Well, the price of silver changes daily, a few months ago you would be doing well to get 8 or 9 times face value. A lot of people will tell you that you should be able to sell for melt value, but dealers are in business for profit. I would realistically expect to get 85-90% of melt from a dealer. With silver at $17.25 melt would be $12.48 per dollar of face value. Looks like you have $100 in face, I'd be looking to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $1085.

unless you're selling MS coins, most of the people buying on ebay are looking for bargain prices. That's why there are Barber quarters in bad condition being sold for a dollar. Eventually demand for coins and silver is going to so high that it won't be hard selling stuff on ebay and getting what it's worth.

I think silver could double in value within the next 1-2 years you should keep all those coins and consider it an investment. Silver is very undervalued right now even compared to gold.

Why not split all the coins up into groups and sell them. They don't look to be in bad shape, I think you wrote 1.5 on one of the silver halvs, you should be able to get 3 dollars for that even on ebay.

Around $1,100 would be far more desirable then the $787 bid I got on E-bay - so that's good news. Any suggestions for venues to get a price like that?

what is your feedback number on ebay? if it's low that might explain the lack of bids.

Instead of saying 6 lbs, it would be nice to know the breakdown in denomination. Some buyers might jump at the Mercury dimes or others trying to fill holes in a new album might grab a bunch of FDR dimes, etc.

I agree...sort out the coins by denomination and type (e.g. Mercury, Roosevelt). Make an inventory list of dates. Sell them by separate denomination, type, and date.

Try this...separate out all your Mercury dimes, and then post a list of them on this forum (with a few pictures if you can) and see what we say about sayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, the overall value of your Mercury dimes.

There are no guarantees...only, if you hold your breath, you cant suffocate yourself...guaranteed.

In selling terms, you have to be realistic about what you have. What you basically have there is a $100 bag of what is known as "junk silver." The collecting value isn't as important as the silver value, and buyers on ebay are going to do their best to pay as little as possible. With reserves, buyers assume that a seller has unrealistic expectations.

What I would do if I were going to sell it on ebay: List it with a Buy It Now or Best Offer of $1199. List your full coin inventory. Take your time and field a few offers. If no one bids what you want, don't sell it right now.

You could also call a precious metals dealer (check out APMEX.com for example) and see if they are currently buying 90% silver coins and what their buy price is. You could probably get pretty close to your $1100 number if you were trying to lock in a price today.

If you lived in my area or were asking me what my buy price would be on the lot, I would offer you between $950-1000 as I am one of those collector/buyers who tries to pay less than the market for silver in case of a sudden and sustained downturn in bullion prices.

Let us know what happens.

Maybe I missed something but I didn't see any Mint Marks posted. You should really find out what you have prior to attempting to sell. For example many S mint mark coins are worth much more than a Philly coin. Also, be aware of possible Mint error coins. Of course if your just interested in dumping them all and don't care if you may have a coin worth the entire price your asking, keep on posting here and eventually you'll be able to sell here.

I agree! They will sell better by lots with dates and mints listed. OR get your 50 posts in and list them on the forum to sell.

Just for the record, I'm the person who referred gryphx here. He's well aware of how we handle things at Coin Community, so at least in this case I know that a new member isn't just registering for the purpose of selling stuff.

To fully maximize your return, you need to take the time and inventory them. Who knows, perhaps a key date will reveal itself. With a better idea of what you have, I would then put them up on the 'bay at 99 cents with no reserve (with good pics) and let the market determine their value. When I used to sell on ebay, I realized the strongest prices for my no reserve auctions......they encouraged a lot of bidding activity, and lots of activity draws attention. JMHO.
Oh, and welcome aboard gryphx!
