Hi,
I am a beginning coin collector (and am new to this community). I found this 1978 Lincoln Memorial penny while coin roll hunting. It looks like it has a filled "D" mint mark. What is this error exactly, and is it worth anything? If so, how much?
Thank you!

This happened because the post that forms the center of that device, has broken off the die. So every coin after this even will have the same look of no center on the mint mark. No premium for this one either. But they are still wheat cents. Still keepers.

I disagree with coop in regards to premium, so long as you listed it as an error coin, you probably can get a dollar or two for it on ebay.

Since this subject came up, I mad a drawing of what a broken post would look like on the letter 'B':

In addition to the broken post, circulation put many dings into this cent. A few hits can move the metal to fill the hole + there appears to be grime trapped in the center of the 'D'

XavierOfGreen: I think it's misleading to call this an error coin to get a cheap buck on ebay. By that definition of error coin, a good 70%+ of coins are errors and I would be able to turn a $25 box of cents into $1750. Dies are continually worn until retirement and the mint does not warrant replacing the die for 1 small broken post. This means that this coin is within Mint specifications, meaning not an error. There are people that try to pass non-errors off to new collectors, even for a few bucks, and it's not right.

Calling a die chip an error is completely appropriate and general practice, and there are people who collect them. Its not misleading at all.. Cuds are called major die breaks for a reason, die chips fall under the category of minor die breaks which are still mint errors, however minor they appear to be.
