I am in the market for a graded (by NGC, PCGS, OR ANACS) liberty cap large cent. I would like it to be AG, G, or VG. It can be a details grade. What would YOU pay for one in that condition?
Thanks

That's like saying "How much would you pay for a car?"

For the sake of discussion -- if we assume an R2 (common) variety Large Cent -- in a TPG slab, expect to pay anywhere from $200-$400 for an AG details w/severe issues, to $800-$1200 or more for a problem free VG8. So my answer would be "between $200 to $1200" and that's only a rough estimate.

"I would like it to be AG, G, or VG."

That's a $500 to $500,000 spread, isn't it?
If you're just looking for a slabbed type, I imagine less than a thousand bucks would purchase a very acceptable example.

I'd take my time to find one with decent eye appeal even if it is a details grade/ genuine piece.

This coin is about the worst grade I've ever seen and even at the current price I'd pass on it. http://www.collectorscorner.com/Pro...?id=21443513

I would save my money until I could afford a pleasing certified VF (or better!) with strong detail on both sides and no serious problems. Based on my searches over the last couple years it looks like $2000 isn't enough.

Be patient and watch ebay. I was able to snag this one for a $139 bid plus $4 shipping.

There is a big difference between AG and VG. Given the way Liberty Cap large cents are graded today, to me anything below VG would be pretty ratty. Remember what I wrote about the reverse on these coins. If all other factors are decent, if you find a VG with all of the reverse lettering, grab it. The cheapest date and variety is the 1795 with the plain ridge.
