I'd vote PR-01 on that one. In the twisted world of the PCGS registry, that coin, if it makes it into the Poor holder might be worth some good money ... But not to me.

I think that "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the rim above it is too strong for PO-1. I call this one a Fair-2

Yea, but date is barely readable. Still looks like a Poor to me.

I'm on the fence with this one. A toss between PO-1 and FR-2 . Like mentioned above '' In God We Trust '' not worn enough .

thanks for the opinions all. anyone know what kind of price this could pull if it was in a PCGS PO-01? or FR-02? the PCGS pop says 2 in FR-02 and none in PO-01.

I would give this one a PO-1.

I would send Nickelsearcher a message about this one. He specializes in lowball coins.

I received your email dollarman ...

Assuming the coin has original surfaces ... and there isn't any damages not apparent in the photographs .... then this coin is a slam dunk FR02 at PCGS.

The reverse is definitely PO01 level ... I concur with the others that the obverse legend IGWT is a bit too strong to be certain of a PCGS PO01 grade.

That said ... the PCGS wizards are an unpredictable bunch when faced with lowballs such as this ... and they might judge it favorable and award the ultimate lowball grade.

For comparison sake ... not to steal your thread but to show you a visual reference ... I have 19 total Barber halves certified PCGS PO01. I looked through those photos and came across this certified 1896 example that is quite similar in wear to your quarter dollar ...

1896 Barber half dollar - PCGS PO01

1899-Barber-Quarter...poor-1?

As to value in a problem free PCGS holder? ... not worthy of the cost of certifying if it comes back FR02.

Why, you ask?

Because the current market demand for lowball Barber quarters is for all practical purposes non-existent. For the previous two years or so there has been one collector adding to their Barber quarter PCGS lowball registry ... and that individual has this coin in a PCGS FR02 holder which is Population 2/0.

That said ... get this coin into a PCGS PO01 holder and now you have a marketable item (assuming you wish to sell it). I'd say around $50 or so.

I'm good friends with the above mentioned Barber quarter lowball specialist ... and could facilitate a discussion amongst thee two of you if this coin is indeed returned as PO01.

Let us know how that turns out for you.

Thanks for all the help nickelsearcher, you've been a lot of help. I'm going to look into the process of certification but likely won't be sending it for awhile. I will keep you updated on this.

I sent you a private email discussing my willingness to help a Canadian CCF member obtain PCGS certification (if desired) on this potentially PO01 lowball.
