An-1801-Half-Dime-For-Your-Grading-Consideration An-1801-Half-Dime-For-Your-Grading-Consideration

The 1801 Half Dime is a very underrated coin. "Coin Facts" claims that there are 250 examples of the coin known, but if there are a lot of them are very low grade. This one seems to have made the rounds of the major auctions in the 1970s and '80s. The late Jules Reiver told me that the coin looked familiar as have a couple of other collectors. The coin has been in my collection and out of numismatic circulation for since the mid 1980s.

There are two die varieties known for the years. Apparently Valentine had only a few poorly preserved examples to examine when he wrote his book because his V-1 and V-2 varieties are really die states of the same variety. This one is LM-2 it as a R-4, (76 to 200 known).

I'll have more to say about this piece when I reveal the grade.

AU50 - The coin shows some luster and looks like a higher grade, but hard to tell with the strike.

this is a toughie...AU50 but the remaining luster could push it to AU53.

Boy, I'm no authority here, but I'll venture AU-53.
Rest in Peace

This is a coin you almost have to "roll" in hand to see where there is circulation as opposed to soft strike areas. Strictly from the photos provided I'd be at an AU-53. A beautiful example of a very scare type.

Lovely coin. Hard to distinguish wear from weakness from the photos, but I would say AU-55. Is that a Retained Cud over Liberty on the obverse?

I'm gonna break from the crowd and say EF-45. I know, I know.......the strike is weak and the die break caused uneven metal flow. It does need to be in hand to tell for sure, but I don't think it would be terribly out of whack at 45. I may get "schooled". We shall wait and see what the TPG gods anointed it as!

PCGS graded this piece EF-45. I think that it is an AU-50. In the "Classic U.S. Coin" area, I'll show you some die state information that might surprise you about this variety. As a preview, I'll tell you that the obverse die that was used to strike this piece is totally broken from the "T" in "LIBERTY" to the bottom of Ms. Liberty's drapery. Given that it is remarkable that this coin shows as much design detail as it does.
