I was wondering how far some of you have gotten with building a Buffalo nickel set from your CRH finds. As most here know, building a Jefferson set from CRH finds can be done with patience and dedication. The idea that a Buffalo set can be built in this day-and-age seems improbable. But is it impossible? Over the past 3 years I've been able to fill 29 holes in my Buffalo folder and if I were to factor in the dateless nickels I've pickled for dates, I'd be at 39 including a few harder dates/mms. And I don't run through the numbers of boxes some of the hardy CRH enthusiasts get through.I know Yinzi has been keeping track but how about the rest of you? How far have you taken your CRH Buffalo Sets?

Quote: Over the past 3 years I've been able to fill 29 holes in my Buffalo folder... Well done. I do not think it is possible because the key dates are going to be tough, but I would love to be proven wrong. Regardless, I look forward seeing the results.

Out of the 44 slots I filled, 15 of them are pickled nickels, which included a couple of tough dates, 15S and 21S. Best coins I have found is 1913-D type II in AU condition ($200 value). I believe that it's not likely to complete the series unless hitting a collection dump.

Wow! Good job! I was not aware that even 29 holes could be filled nowadays. I hope you CAN get the all.

Hi folks - thanks for responding. Yes, this would be quite an uphill task. I think I've been fortunate these past two years with collection dumps. It makes me wonder what other nickels were in the dump but didn't find their way to me. Still, I've picked up a decent stray Buffalo in between, including a 1913D Var 2 (pickled unfortunately). Yinzi - you're leading the way even with the pickled nickels at this point. I'm curious to hear how far along others are and perhaps which nickels are outstanding. Earle - it would be quite cool to pull it together. I'm afraid though that my number of boxes per year wouldn't warrant me doing it anytime soon. But in three stellar boxes, I've pulled over two rolls of buffalo and these put a nice dent into piecing this thing together. Maybe another 3 stellar boxes would get me close...but that would be expecting too much.

Back when I still CRHed nickels pretty heavily about 4 years ago, I came across a box of what must have been a dumped collection of Buffalos: Over 500 of them in that single box, though most were dateless, and the rest that did have dates were no better than VG at best. Still there was a wide variety of dates/mints and I was able to assemble nearly a complete set. Unfortunately, most of the teens branch-mint dates had to be acid-treated. The best date I found that didn't need acid was this 1921-S, identifiable only by the hair detail and ribbon wave: From that box I was able to fill all spaces except for these six: 1913S T2, 1915S, 1926S, 1927S, 1931S, 1938D Since my dump bank got rid of their coin counter shortly after, I never was able to continue the hunt for the rest of the set (All this, and I still never found the elusive 50-D Jeff either)

Wow! Great story! Right place-right time. I've had it three times now and grateful for it. Even at no better than VF, it's exciting to know that it all came at face value. I need to learn the hair detail/ribbon trick for '21 nickels. So far my only '21 came with the date and ribbon. I see a gap difference between the ribbon strands.
I'll have a look tonight and take pics of my finds so far. My CRH set has the mismatched appearance but to be expected from roll find specimens. Not particularly hand picked as we know.

Yinzi - that's an awesome find for a CRH set!! You've really done well with CRH events in all denominations. I appreciate the stats in your footer/signature. It's nice to have a target!
Allfome - I appreciate the moral support! I've been keeping 3 sets of Buffalos going: a Dansco album for purchases, a CRH folder (above), and a set of Pickled Nickels (an old Treat folder). I haven't really pursued the Buffalo and most of my purchases have been off the LCS bid board. Otherwise, I've just been reacting to the ones falling out of the rolls!
