Skippypnb Valued Member 59 Posts	Posted 03/28/2016 10:50 am IMO: Twenty years ago VF because a little mint luster remained. Today, no telling! It is my AU-55 but TPGS AU-58. IMO, if a TPGS or anyone else called this coin MS they should be spanked and the state of grading education is worse than I thought! Report this Post to the Staff
billjones Pillar of the Community United States 1499 Posts	Posted 03/28/2016 3:24 pm This 1800 Bust Dollar is a Bolender 20, and it is the discovery specimen for the variety. Bolender discovered this coin as the first of its kind and used a photo of the obverse as the plate coin in his book on Bust Dollar die varieties. The obverse die failed early on as shown by the sinking and disappearing detail in the center of the obverse. That probably accounts for the rarity of this variety which is now an R-5 or high R-4. (probably 50 to 75 known) This coin has been off the numismatic market since 1976. Back then it was graded EF-45. Today it is in an NGC AU-58 holder. It's probably an AU-55 by today's standards. If you were to sell this coin as an EF-45 and price it according at that grade, you would be giving away money hand over fist. I bought this coin at the 1976 ANA Convention, which held in New York City. Report this Post to the Staff
