Hi Sandy - looks like burnished material rolled over the rim into the field. Let's wait for a second opinion.

All kinds of new stuff for me; never heard of "burnished material" sounds like something cool though. Thanks

Fancy term used around the metal shops to describe material that is scraped from it's original position to another; rolled edge that carries over onto an adjacent edge/plain.

You hear the term a lot around presses where the tool and die clearances get larger from wear (tool and die rub against each other). Too much clearance causes a poor sheer/break edge on the sheet/roll of metal being worked and sometimes material is extruded to a burr that gets rolled over. The metal should break cleanly but when the burr appears, it's time to rework the tool/die.

This is the result of a hit to the edge, pushing the rim onto the face of the coin and flattening [smoothing] out during circulation, IMHO.

As you continue your search you will see this somewhat often. PMD, good eye though.
