Ok, so after many months of piecing together my set up, I final got the final piece.....a copystand. So I am still having software issues. I downloaded the EOS Utility, tried to open it, but got an alert that said "Cannot be used with this version of the operating system". I am using a MacBook Air. Anyone know how to fix this problem? I ended up having to use "Image Capture". It's an app that's in the Launchpad of my Mac. It does NOT allow me to do live view and so taking this pic was a major pain..... Please help with this if you know how to fix this issue.

Here is a picture of my current set up:

And here is my first effort with that set up:

So....what do you think for my first try despite my issues?

After all that work and patience its nice to get a good picture. I am sure RMPSRMPS or others can give pointers to improve the pic but for a first shot it works for me.

I gather the rig is set up in the basement or work shop. I can just make out an angle iron/steel support for the table. If that is correct then you may well find the table the rig is on is a significant limiting factor. Such a table will transmit and amplify vibration. If you can ( I know you have the patience) hunt out a much more solid table in a garage sale/OP shop or the like. I am sure for now your set up will perform well for you but in time you will want to lift your game and that is when a more substantive table would help

P.S. Grand Total = $307.78 without shipping and shipping was $38.99. So Grand Total was $346.77

Canon Rebel XS $99.99 + $11.59 Shipping
Copystand $99.95 + $19.95 Shipping
Nikon 75mm Lens $49
M42 Focusing Helicoid $25.82
Objective $10.95
AC Power Adapter $10.38
2 M42 Extension Tubes $10.70
39mm-42mm Adapter $3.95
M42-EOS Adapter $ $2.99 + $1.50 Shipping

I literally had nothing about 6-7 months ago. It takes patience and lots of ebay surfing, but it can be done for under $400!

Not too bad!

Thanks Austrokiwi! I am eager to work out the kinks and get a little clearer shot. I'm sure with practice and guidance from the great people on the forum, I'll get there!

On the table suggestion A cheap possibility would be a decent(heavy) piece of hard wood sitting on two columns of concrete block

For sure! I just threw everything up on my garage workbench just to see if I could get it all to work. To be honest, I was a little concerned buying the camera off of ebay and didn't even know if it would work. I have ZERO camera experience and consequently no other lens to test it with. I just had to wait until I had everything. I'll set up a more permanent table, etc once I figure things out a bit and determine what my longterm needs are going to be. Thanks for the tip! :)

Looks great! I'm still a few pieces away from my under-$400 set-up, but I have most of the major things. I just need to find time to figure out what I have left and try to find it on ebay.

I don't know which one you got, but if it is the $10 one I was looking at be careful. Take a look at the one Canon sells I think it was about $114 (CAD), look at the main cable it has a different configuration.
In a different thread it was discussed that the cheaper ones can fry the camera.

Excellent results from your first shot, especially without live view. I still remember how horrible my first shots were long ago (also without live view).

Are there any general rules regarding the length/how many sections of extension tubes to use for each denomination? I shot this coin with only one full tube attached.

Very decent pic to start. No blown highlights and good shadows. Well done!

There are no general rules on # of extension tubes. You just need to experiment with different combos of extensions and helicoid positions, then write down what you find so you can quickly go back to it when needed.
