finally ordering macro tubes for the wife's D5200, is there any advantage to using this as well? says it can be used as flash or constant light (unsure if intensity is adjustable)

Yes, by all means, make some coin pictures. But also post back to this thread to tell us how it works: 1) as a flash, 2) with constant light, and 3) if that constant light is variable.

So happy to see this thread started. I bought a ring light too and am just starting to get it figured out. Not a whole lot of success yet but I will keep hammering at it. I'm sure this thread will help! I bought the Vivitar VIV-DR-7000. It has choice of light, ( with 7 levels of intensity) or flash, (with 7 levels of intensity) and came with 3 different colored covers for the LED's. So far the only decent pictures I've taken using it are in the "Light" mode.....Flash mode has been without success. I'm using a lens and not bellows so I can retain metering.

I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to know how you like the marco light ring.
Post some pictures please.

My experience suggests some coins do well wth a ring while others are ruined. My examples show the same coin shot ring (top), artificial bulbs (middle) and by a window (diffused daylight - bottom). I don't shoot moderns so can't say much there. I do recommend ones with adjustable intensity and like continuous better than flash by a wide degree.

My thought is that without variable adjustment the lighting will be too much. I don't use my usb scope as a result. Good luck either way.

It's actually nearly impossible for the lighting to be too bright. All that will happen is the camera will shorten the exposure time. Most often in macro shooting the lighting is so dim that exposure times are quite long. More lighting just means you will get more reasonable exposure times. Now, if you're running at 1/1000 of a second because you're blasting the coin with 5 1kW halogens, then it might be going overboard. Til then, more is usually better.

What are the recommendations for a ring light. There are many to chose from, which one would be best for a Canon T1i? Thanks.

Wade, what type of ring light are you using? What is the model of the one in your photo? Thanks, Hamm.
