I am going through my 1938/1964 nickels looking for DD using the briansvarietycoins website. What is the most efficient way to go through the website without looking at dozens of different variety just to find that none match what I have?

I'm sure that this question sounds weird
Rest in Peace

Group by date and mint mark if you haven't already. Other than that you can check for key indication of a variety and at least learn what you are hoping to find as you progress through the years.

Best way is to learn what a doubled die is and how they look, that way there is no need to make separate piles by date or mint mark.Once you know what to look for just look through your coins and then when you find a doubled die put it aside for attribution. Good luck on your hunt.

I agree with John1

also remeber to check for rpms, bar nickels, lamination, Cuds, die clashes and trails

Here are some areas of interest I check on a Jefferson nickel I will update with some other areas latter

nickels have a few different areas where doubling happen

examples

some years like 1957 proofs
Look at the stars for a extra doubled points under te original star

so I always look at the star and the top of y for notches and on the bottom and top of the 1 in the date

On the In I look at the bottom for extra thickness or separation lines

Nickel-Variety-Search.

G in God another good place to look for separation line on crossbar

for a DDR on the reverse check tops and bottom of the letters in UNUM

five and cents for notches

cello on Monticello some have strong spread on the O

Knowing what could happen on each device is key to identifying doubled dies. The doubling is usually in the same places, but with different strengths. The devices might be doubled at the top, middle or bottom. So knowing what to look for helps a lot. Study the listings and read what he is showing as hub doubling.

This sounds like a subject that should be prepared with each coin series? I wonder who could do that? LOL It will take some times to put this together, but I'll try to get something soon. Not today, but maybe later on. But for now, check out Brian's varieties. Take notes Copy images into a word program. Get the sense as to what can happen on hub doubling. Keep in mint that in a series, that the same types of doubling can appear on any other year. Stronger/weaker spreads are possible. I have a word program file of just 'Coin Information.' You know stuff that you read and want to remember. You can copy images from the threads. (but you can edit them or post these) but the information is there is you little word folder. Highlight, right click, past them to your word folder. (mine is in the 100+ pages) Stuff you want to save, you don't want to write down, tags from websites links. There is no end to what you might save. I wish I had started mine with different files for Cents, Nickels ETC, Errors, storage information as separate folders. So you might want to start that today while your starting to learn about a certain subject. Hope this helps.

What I am trying to say is that the list is overwhelming. How do you narrow down what you are looking for other than year and mintmark?

I was wondering if you meant an easier way to navigate through the sale info and find just the variety info?

Nickel Doubled Die Listing by year.
http://www2.briansvarietycoins.com/listings

When selecting topic from the left home page menu, I found some have additional links positioned above for more direct search by year feature and some topics do not. Thanks, Doug.

PS: If needed and pending your browser, you can use the "Find or Search" option to quickly scan / search info on a web page if needed.
