Ciao everybody, maybe somebody can help me with a wonderful Sasanian coin that I am not able to identify. I think it is a Drachm of the Sasasian Empire, an issue of the emperor Shapur I (because of the four-merlon crown with ear flaps), but I cannot read the legends. Thanks in advance! Roberto

Roberto, any concerns about style here? Not my area, but it seems off a bit. Also, while the obverse perhaps references Shapur I (with obvious ear flaps, for instance), don't the fire altar attendants face outward on all of his issues? The reverse here seems more like Shapur II. Again, not my area - so my concerns may well be misplaced. As far as legends, Beastcoins may provide some help: http://beastcoins.com/Sasanian/Sasanian.htmI suspect Echizento or Ancientnoob can help. They each know this series really well.

Bob, you are right, the style of the two sides seems refer to two different periods and kings. But I think only an expert able to read the legends will be able to solve the mystery. Thanks for the link, by the way. I add here the details of the coin: 26 mm and 3,98 grams of weight.

The obverse crown type is of Shapur I but the reverse is not one that I have seen for him. The reverse comes close to a match for Shapur II. Size and weight seem to be OK though. I suspect this is either an unrecorded type or a copy. I'll see if I can get Anoob to take a look, he knows a lot more about these than I do.

I would agree this coin is off. Shapur coins are made by many different mints of various skill levels. What puzzles me is there is no mention of a variation where the fire altar attendants are facing the fire. They most always facing away. It is an interesting coin but the style looks off the the reverse is unusual, that is why I dont like it.

Ciao, I have made a long research and have a look to what I've found. http://www.forgerynetwork.com/asset...7fCoxJtr9KU=The reverse of my coin is almost identical to this one counterfeit, with the difference that this one is with the correct reverse for the relative king, not like mine. What a pity! Roberto

It's good that the forgers weren't smart enough to know what the real coin should look like. But still they could have fooled someone that didn't know about this coin type.

Yes looks like you picked up a fake. At least if it is one of these fakes in the description, your disk of metal has the intrinsic value of the silver.

Interesting update. The reverse is a match to forgery stroke for stroke. This forgery type should be recorded. I would submit it to FORVM fakes and Forgery Network as well as Zeno.ru.
I suspect this coin would have fooled most people.

Has it already been uploaded to ZENO database? If not yet, then dear robert_, would you mind my posting images of your coin to ZENO.RU?
