Here is my last acquisition, a strange Dupondius from Nemausus (Nīmes) showing Augustus and Agrippa (25,90 mm, 12,93 g). No crocodiles around today in the area! (Except in dedicated farms for tourists) Note the two serpent heads above.
Nice coin! The crocodile chained to a palm tree symbolizes the subjugation of Egypt. Augustus (as Octavian) and Agrippa defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the battle of Actium in 31 BC, bringing Egypt permanently under Roman domination. Nemausus was a Roman colony (COL NEM) settled by retired veterans of the Egypt campaigns who were given plots of land as a reward for their service.
Very nice historical explanation about the chained crocodile. I didn't know that... yes, I like the green patina too, especially well suited to the crocodile !
I can certainly see what you see but looking at a number of specimens online, they seem to be intended only as the ties of the wreath which is visible to the left of the palm (Images courtesy CNG).
