Its amazing how fast the gold plated Inukshuk coin sold out. So I think it deserve its own thread. Has there been another RCM intended for the general public that sold out so fast? The 2 0z Voyageur do not count since it is a MC exclusive.

Fairly low mintage, nice price, FIRST reverse gold-plated coin. All the markers for a hot coin imo.

Good idea, for creating dedicated topic. Design of the coin - this is up to collector. But disappeared so quickly? Not usual for standalone 1/2oz coin. This behavior was observed with Autumn Bliss - suddenly it was sold out, without entering to public release. My thought - commissioned, that's why started with extremely low stock. Seeing low stock, some business oriented people (like that ebay seller with 10 coins) grabbed it in quantities, involving to this cycle other people, who just want to own "Mint's First" and "Hot coin".

@CoinCanuck: what is the "Reverse Gold Plated coin", please ? according to my assumption, RCM might issue background colorized coin and call it "Reverse-colourized"

From the Mint description:"REVERSE AND OBVERSE GOLD PLATING! Gold-plating throughout both the coin's reverse and obverse gives your fine silver coin the unique appearance of a gold coin".

Thanks CoinCanuck for clarifications. Apologize, was too lazy to check the RCM description. Well, it is the same finish, which was observed with "PanAm Toronto Gold medal coin", but Inukshuk is silver, and PanAm was the base metal. But Idea is the same.

Its hard to believe but the Post Office has zero coins left. The other forum said there was 700 available for order at local post offices this morning. So I thought I might pick up a couple more from my local post office. The clerk look it up in her system and it shows zero.
I know this coin is a nice looking coin but, come on, 6000 coins gone in a couple of days?! Are people buying it for their collection or for flipping?

There has been quite a few examples of this theme coin other than being a reverse gold plating and smaller mintage, almost assured once the buzz is gone it will drift towards issue, plus most of us incur HST of some form.

Gold-Plated = silver field + gold motif
Reverse Gold-Plated = gold field + silver motif

Reverse Gold-Plated = gold field + silver motif yes, that's should be the explain, in analogy to "Proof / Reverse Proof" concept. Just not sure if this achievement really deserves to be announced.

I wonder that the main attraction over this coin once again is that it might sharply increase in value, like bees to honey nothing changes from one year to the next except for a whole new group of optimistic NCLT buyers..... Or maybe some of these buyers are of the belief that this is the first gold-plated coin ever issued by RCM and it's future price will somehow be driven upward by gold prices? I don't know but comparing photos of it on ebay to the high relief 2013 version with an issue price of $39.95, the latest one stands out as being somewhat lacklustre but another big attraction I suppose is new versus old. But who knows, perhaps collecting Inukshuks is a popular theme....

So if this coin is deserving of significance because it's a FIRST for reverse gold-plating by RCM, likewise the distinguished honour of very FIRST gold-plated coin minted by RCM is also widely recognized, right? And it was.....?

I also liked the 2013 Inukshuk, but as MoneyPenney mentioned, the 2013 O Canada 1/2oz had big for NCLT mintage of 40K. Btw, the duplicate of the 2013 Inukshuk coin, that I had, went to the person who (according to his words) worked at the North for a long years, and he wanted some collectible item that will be as reminder.
As per current coin, people who loaded it, do not have illusions for the long term value, but hope for quick re-sell till it "hot".

And it was.....? I think the first time the RCM used gold-plating on a silver coin was in 1990 when it released the first of the coins from its $20 Aviation Series I. Each of the coins featured a small cameo of a famous Canadian pilot as part of its reverse design (the other main design element on each coin was a famous Canadian plane) - the pilot cameo was selectively gold-plated. The first fully gold-plated coin that I can think of is the 2002 commemorative silver dollar that was included in a Special Edition proof set for that year. Neither is very "sought after" today.

Thank you Commens, I can't say I'm surprised that you'd offer a knowledgable answer! I would have guessed the first partially gold-plated coin to be the 1997 proof toonie with the gold-plated core, the 2002 fully gold-plated silver dollar as well. If buyers of the Inukshuk are attracted by the reverse gold-plating (a first) I'd expect they'd be equally interested in earlier gold-plating firsts as well.

A low mintage 2006 silver 50-cent from the last of the 'Mint Report' series had the entire reverse gold-plated, with a silver reeded edge and silver obverse in proof strike. It really never commanded any premium, certainly not like the 2003 gold-plated 1c from the mint report series. http://www.colonialacres.com/produc...lated?ref=56
