I have a Louisiana quarter that looks like a simple strike thru on the Obv. It is much more interesting than that. In the words United States, the last S in States is sunken deep into the planchet and the S is normally formed deep within the depression. I believe that this can only happen if some type of malable debris was trapped between the Hub and Die when the die was formed, thereby trapping the debris and altering the die. Die Variety? The rest of the coin appears normal. Also would like to purchase another similar coin. Thanx...G. Here is pic. Will add more as I learn how to. If you have a Photo editing program you can crop and re-size your pictures to make them upload to the forum. I think the size max is 100k. I would like to know also if it is possible to upload larger files.

Without photos there's no way of telling what you have.

Okay...a struck through is where something is sitting on the die or planchet and the die strikes through that material to make the coin.
A die variety is doubling on the die created at the time the die was made.
Given that these are two completely and obviously different things, I'm sure you know which one you can immediately rule out.
On to your theory - my gut feeling says I doubt it...I would think a number of these would have surfaced by now, given the age of the coin and the fact that a LOT of people collect the series. It's possible, but not probable...at all.
In order to tell anything for sure from the coin, the image will have to be much larger or the coin will have to be examined in person by someone who knows what they are doing. The tiny image you posted simply isn't enough to judge from.

OK C.C. Improbable to be sure, but not impossible. To my knowledge there are 4-5 error coins that are known that exhibit this phenomena. Cannot tell you what coins or where they are, just read awhile back that they are known.
The only other way I can imagine this happening is if something got down into the coining chamber. That would seem even less probable considering just how complicated that would get.
The indent on this coin goes about 20-30% of the way down into the planchet. Down in that hole is this real pretty and well formed S. A normal strike thru would have wiped this out, or at least seriously flattened it. Not the case here.
Sorry about pics. Best I have for now.
FYI...It seems only natural to me to locate currently unknown coins.
I used to help document the modern varieties for Walter Breen back in 1963-5. He would come to our coin club once or twice a month to help with our NECA work. Neca was just forming. The club members would dump their coins on my table and I would cherrypick out their varieties and the elders would write it all down. Years later NECA and CONE joined together to become CONECA. Where do you think that variety info came from? Numistmatists.
Walter was an excellent teacher and a good friend. He asked me to help him. I did. He was making a book. Now that was a long time ago. I also knew Arnold Margolis many many years ago. I used to ask him to explain to me the errors that I did not understand. I remember him showing me a dollar coin that had been struck some 18 times. How he could figure that out I still do not know. Said he counted it. I believed him. That coin was a mess and his personal favorite at that time.
Back then people would do that. They would teach and share. It was a lot of fun.
I CPicked my first monster variety in 1959 at a school lunch counter. It was THE 1955 double die cent. I was 6. Had been collecting since I was 3. Peace out. G...

To gusp. I purchased Walter Breens Encyclopedia Back in the 80's from a publishing co in Manhattan. I opened the book and found the Jefferson Nichel and Buffalo chapters to be upside down. I called them and they wanted the book back with an exchange, I declined. Have you heard of any one else with this ERROR.

Homer1, You just reminded me of a book I have; "La Histoira Del Valle del Rio Guerte". The history of the Fio fuerte river valley It is in Spanish, obviously, but the point is that it was put together , and the cover was placed "upside down". They destroyed all of them, (They thought), but my Godmother's sister managed to save one for me. Dick

That Book must be worth something LD, great save. But you must admit a coin book on errors with an error in making the book is rare. I also have the original Grey's Anatomy Medical Book from the 1800's hand signed by Gray and all hand painted in color of all anatomy parts of surgical procedures. $$$$
I didn't mean to upset you LD, It's OK I agree.

Homer1. Boy if age ain't getting to me. Cannot remember. I do remember at some point in my past someone laughing about a book published with pages upside down. Caused a minor stir. It would only seem appropriate that Walters Book could have that happen. His life's work turned upside down. His later life troubles saddened me. Gusp

You can read about Breen here. This is accurate stuff. It is safe to say that he was a researcher but. Many numismatists take Walter Breen with a grain of salt. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Breen

This was a real eye opener, Shocking, Sobering, and Sad. Actually too much to read lost my appetite. Thanks for the info FDRs. In addition, and in spite of all the turmoil in his life. I still regard Breen and his book important and one of the best, I remember years back reading something about a numismatist expert named Breen arrested in Coney Island N.Y. But I never tied the same person to the book. It just didn't click. Thank you.

It was such that there were people specifically assigned to keep an eye on him when he attended coin shows between his arrests and when he was not incarcerated just to avoid any problems.
