When I see Low feedback sellers posting Gold Bars in assay cards, with the serial number blacked or whited out, a red flag goes up. With gold selling for $1,200 an ounce. I want to see the exact bar, obverse and reverse. Months or years down the line, I don't want to find out its counterfeit. A few seconds to scan or photo the bar, is not much to ask for an expensive item. My Opinion-Blacked or whited out serial numbers indicate potential Counterfeit. Get your gold bars checked out by professional buyers, a jeweler or even a pawn shop. If you don't want to take it out of assay card, most shops have hand held X-RAY machines, call first. Don't respond and say don't buy it or buy it and find out if its real. The Far East is doing everything to ruin the economy, counterfeits are showing up everywhere.

Even if the number was showing, I wouldn't buy from a low feedback seller. In fact, I only buy bullion from the major dealers on ebay.

China has recently released a fake bar with "The Perth Mint tamper-evident case" printed on front of assay card. I always check dealers feedback. Make sure they are reputable. If you have doubt, bring it to a gold dealer who has a counterfeit metal detector. Most have them, call first. After all, its an expensive sale.

This is why I don't buy bullion on ebay. Scams like these are easy to allocate, some are (much) worse to identify. I already got scammed once on a sales portal (not ebay) on something much less hefty and that was an eye-opener for me. It kicked off my collection of fake (silver) coins, though. :) That's why I rather just buy some in shops I trust when I'm traveling to foreign countries for work or pleasure (in Norway there's generally too much added costs to be profitable to invest, I usually buy the exceptions to the rule). And mostly gold and silver (classic) coins at bullion prices, I don't collect bars that much. Bars aren't that tempting to me: I also want eye-candy. :) Anyway, for those getting scammed and giving positive feedback... There's a Dutch word called 'leergeld', which literally means 'learning money'. I guess we all have to pay a bit in order to get wiser... and some more than others.

The key is to not find out it's counterfeit years down the road. Take it out of its assay certificate and test it yourself. If you're relying on serial numbers to identify any object, well what can I tell you... Who cares about a plastic holder, just take it out because you want the GOLD not the PLASTIC. Caveat emptor.

I just have to re-post this. To all you idiots out there: Keep buying counterfeit gold from un-repeuck-able, Low Feedback sellers.
