Don't take any wooden nickels: John Masters has been ignoring that advice for decades
http://www.sussexcountian.com/artic...WS/160329785

Quote:
Like all of us, John Masters has heard the old warning against taking wooden nickels.

But because he's ignored that adage for more than three decades, Masters now boasts a collection of thousands of the piney tokens, which he keep neatly arranged in plastic sleeves inside a series of loose-leaf binders.

"I've got about 7,000 to 8,000 of them," he said

Saw this article online and thought that I'd post a link here.

Nice article. I have a collection and am a member of the Canadian Association of Wooden Money Collectors, but definitely don't have as many as he does ... maybe a tenth.

I too have some wooden nickels, but it is quite modest-not more than 40. Really no more than a sampling. I collect too many things as it is.
Rest in Peace

I collect the Tenino, Washington issues. They were the first wooden money, although the earliest ones did not include a five cent denomination.

I think this is really cool, I love exonumia. I have a somewhat large collection of elongated coins but I have a long way to go before I reach the crazy level this guy is at. I hope he never has a house fire.

I've got a small collection of wooden nickles and those elongated cents too.I don't go looking for them but do pick them up when I come across them.

I have seen that article before, it was a good read.

The last coin show I worked some super stud came up to me and gave me one of his wooden nickels/business cards.

A few years ago they handed them out at a coin show I attended, so I took one. Then I accidentally broke it.

At another show (or possibly the same one) I met a dealer whose business cards were in the form of coins, struck in copper. One side depicted the obverse of a double-struck large cent (either 1797 or 1803), while the other had his contact information.

Here's a video I watched today that I found interesting. I'd love one of those machines in my workshop.
