Does the coin has the original surface?

If so, I grade it as AU58. What is your opinion?

I have no exp with these wood grained lincolns.

Looks like original surface to me. Those 1925's, especially Denver and San Francisco, are notoriously weakly struck. So hard to find with any detail. I would say mid AU from the pics, I like it!

In the old days, I'd look a coin like this and not even consider that it might be a counterfeit. Now, with all of the Chinese junk around, I see the weak Lincoln portrait and the strong date an mint mark and start to wonder. The Chinese will make anything these days for a price.

I looked at the "Coin Facts" site and saw a couple of other 1925-S Lincoln cents with a faded portrait so I think the coin is okay. At any rate with that in mind, I can't see this coin making AU-58, even with the hint of red between some of the devices. I've seen cents with that that graded as low as EF.

I'm going to say EF-45 on this one, and I don't think it would be an easy sale because of the weak Lincoln portrait.

Grade AU based on the reverse. The obverse is very weak thus there is almost no way to judge it unless you directly look at the coin on your hand.

I'm in the XF camp and agree that this would be a tough coin to sell, even at VF money.

Not a lovely example because of the weak strike, which is typical. Technical grade AU-50, market grade VF-35.

I am learning from the best.
Let me summarize that most people (the market) does not like weak strike and/or wood grain looking coins. Those coins have to be sold for a price at least one grade lower.
Rest in Peace

I'm a little confused about the profile being so weak and everything else on obverse is not. Reverse looks normal . To me this would be a hard sell . EF-45 Weak strike .

I would put it at AU-55 based on some wear showing on the wheat stalks.

Just as a comparison, here is my 25-S, angled a bit to show luster. It has the same very mushy strike on the obverse; better reverse - a tricky coin to both photograph and grade.

Looks like a nice, original coin to me. Very typical looking plus a nice woodgrain. It's so close to MS, it might just be. I could see someone putting that coin away because "it looks weird". I like the earlier reverse die state, tough to find on these.

I could see this as AU55/58 too. So hard to tell with woodies unless they are in hand! I'm actually working on learning how to make .gifs so I can see luster and help with woodies and such.

Thad, awesome examples and I love the die cracks on your first example!
