I came across this National Numismatic Certification slabbed Roman bronze. They have it as a Septimius Severus Sestertius.

From what I see it's Nerva with FORTVNA AVGVST reverse.

They were only off by 100 years and seven or so emperors.

I will admit to buying some NNC ancient slabs. I once picked up a nice Allectus that they had slabbed as Aurelian.

Here's the NNC slab:

Here's the Nerva Sesterius:

Here's a photo of a similar Nerva Sestertius for comparison with the coin in the NNC slab.

Just a note, for the ancients collectors who might be unfamiliar: NNC is not a "real" slabbing company, they're a basement slabber (albeit a very, very large basement) running as a front operation for ebay coin dealer Centsles. Thus, they're even less likely to be accurate than an actual TPG.

My big concern for this coin would be that it's actually a tourist copy that NNC didn't recognize as such. Or did recognize but got slabbed up anyway.

NNC is worse than raw. Look at a few dozen of Centless auctions and you will be able to spot them forever after.

Photos are always "blended" to look like the coin has no problems. That's not what it looks like when you get it. Plus 90% of his coins are cleaned. The single worst scourge on ebay.

Saw this coin while browsing and chuckled at how wrong it was.

Yet another reason not to buy coins in slabs. It gives people a false sense of security.

True. As no doubt the folks who have placed the 20 bids on this currently listed ebay lot feel secure in the fact that the coin is, as labeled by NGC, Orodes II.

Instead of what it actually is, a Mithradates III.
