I picked up a 1981 Proof Set last weekend at a flee market for $5.00. I was checking it out on ebay, and found a type 2 set with a clear S that sold for $200. How do I tell the difference in a regular set and a type 2 set with a clear S? Any help would be appreciated.
Filled mintmark has little to do with the types on 1981 Proof sets. Both types could be filled or clear. The serifs on the mintmark tell the Difference.
Actually, for a proof set to be Type 2, all of the coins have to have the clear S. Individual Type 2 coins in the set are worth a premium, though. The SBA Type 2 is the most valuable of the set.
