I'm a new member to CCF and have a question regarding Toonie Proof varieties. I'm in the process of building a collection of Toonies including specimen and proof varieties. According to the latest Charlton catalogue (Volume Two, 6th Edition, 2016), RCM produced two versions of Two Dollar proof coins in 2012 and 2014 - fine silver and nickel brass. No mention was made of two versions for 2013 or 2015 -- just fine silver. However, I've seen 2013 and 2015 nickel brass versions for sale on ebay recently. Has RCM been creating two varieties of the Two Dollar proof for all years since 2012?

@ tnt, yes beginning in 2012 and each year thereafter RCM made both a Premium proof set (silver/gold plated) and a Proof set (silver dollar only). The base metal for toonie would be different in each. In your Charlton volume 2 you'll find the reference in the section related to Sets, sellers on ebay often sell the singular coin from broken up sets.

Thanks. That helps a lot. However, I checked Charlton volume 2 in the section related to sets (pages 404-405) and still did not see any reference to a base metal proof set issued in 2013 -- only 2012 and 2014. I'm going to assume Charlton needs updating and that your statement is correct that in 2012 and beyond two different alloy proof sets were created. I base this on the fact that I've seen them for sale and the current RCM website shows two different proof sets (silver and base) for 2016. Thanks.

tnt my sincere apologies, I just looked st my 2013 mint sets and what I thought was one silver dollar proof and one specimen set are actually 2 different 2013 specimen sets. Blue-Winged Teal Special Edition - Canadian Arctic Expeditiion This is very puzzling! I was sure there was a 2013 silver dollar proof set. Adding: I think you're correct that in 2013 there was no brass proof toonie. Vol 2 supports that in the toonie section also. Again, my apologies in having given you wrong information.

I notice this is the only ebay seller with a 2013 brass toonie listed. 262371591470I don't believe it's correct. Somewhat of a coincidence, this seller I happen to recognize and without going into details it's a further reason to believe the listing isn't accurate. ****** So happens this seller is using the identical photo for a 2013 silver proof toonie listing. 262371590112

If not mistaken the last year for nickel based $100 proof sets was 2012.
In 2013-15 the Loonie was nickel brass with the remainder of the coins 3-ply in all of the specimen sets.
Pretty confusing!

Just realized I misread the title of the topic. My earlier response was in regards to Loonies not Toonies. Sorry.
