This is a coin I bought when I was on a TJ rampage a while back. I bought it because it was reeded. I don't know how it got that way, either from the mint (doubtful) or someone did it after the fact (how?). It was interesting, but I didn't pay a lot of attention to other characteristics.

Then I got into my odds & ends binder the other day and noticed that it didn't look "right" so I took it out of the 2x2 for the first time and it looked like my '94 JN from the coin¤cy from back then.

Look at the pictures and see what you think.

Some added info: the original post was long enough, so I'm going to seperate some added information in this follow-up. The coin is 5.01 g, just as it should be but when I took it out of the flip to put it into an air-tite for easier handling & viewing, the coin was too big. My coin calipers disappeared about the time one of my daughters went back to college after spring break [ ] so I can't say how much "too big" it is.

Also, I went on ebay after I did the original post and some of the singles for that date and mint also had the dull (matte) phenotype while others had the typical shiny version.

Can we get a clear closeup of the reverse, please?

I'm thinking it's a fake. Reeding, a botched G in IGWT, and I don't recall Jefferson having such a smug smile.

Those oblique ridges represent damage from a coin-wrapping or coin-sorting machine. They often appear on oversized coins like yours (you have a broadstrike).

Atlas, here's a better reverse:

And Mike, that makes complete sense. It's slight enough that I hadn't even considered the broadstike. I wonder that a coin counter/wrapper wouldn't kick it out as unacceptable.

Unless Atlas642 really has reason to classify it as a counterfeit, a latter day Henning?, I guess it's just another FIDO.

Henning's revenge?

Nah, I like mikediamond's explanation. The matte surfaces plus weird strike threw me off, but it makes sense that a slight broadstrike might cause some form of damage when going through a machine. A neat curiosity.
