I searched the forums here and couldn't really find anything helpful. Anyone have suggestions for online sources for slabbed coin purchases? I am looking for straight purchases, not auctions. A web search brings up millions of results. I figure I would get better results from the forum members with experience. Thanks. Edited by syeb 04/06/2016 2:00 pm

Heritage and Great Collections do some set price sales, although both of them have many more coins available via auctions.
If you are looking for moderate to higher value inventory, they are two of the best.

Thanks all. I am starting to buy straight up graded coins, picking through the offerings of course so am looking to bypass the auction site. Although there are some good buys to be had there with the right mix of patience and sales resistance.

However, what ever you do, remember that asking someone something like that is risky. You really don't know who is who and a person telling you that a place called XXXX could be the owner. Or a person working there. Not likely such a person would tell you to go elsewhere. And too, what is good for someone yesterday may prove to be a nightmare today. You really just don't know.

Check out this online dealer: bozarthnumismatics.com The dealer has high quality slab coins, they are a regular on the coin show circuit and have a coin store in Breham TX and sell on ebay. They are solid to do business with and their coin photos are very consistent.

That is a contemporary counterfeit, which was produced to circulate alongside genuine coins in the time period. Perfectly legal to sell, and actually pretty collectible as well.

So these counterfeits actually were produced by private people and used during that time period?

Also, what are you looking for? Do you have any plans on how you are going to build your collection? Do you have any specific interests yet? Jumping in and buying as much as possible is a viable start, but I would recommend doing some window shopping first and see what appeals to you. Also, LEARN HOW TO GRADE FOR YOURSELF! I cannot emphasize this enough. TPGs sometimes get the grades wrong (usually inflated, especially for the bigger dealers such as Divid Khan), so you need to know what a coin should look like in a given numerical grade range. Window shopping helps with this. Also learn how to detect cleaned coins. In TPG slabs, this is usually pretty easy to spot with a little common sense. If it is a lower grade (XF and below) and it is 100+ years old and still has a fresh silvery look to it, it is likely cleaned. Hairlines on an AU coin gives away that it has been cleaned. Window shopping also help with this. I may be setting a common theme with all of these points.

I'm still getting a feel of it but will certainly focus on early halves - bust and seated. And some samples of other types just to have a somewhat rounded collection. And a Peace dollar or two because I think they are quite nice. Add that to some bullion coins and bars and I'll have enough to keep me busy for a while. I have been doing a lot of window shopping, and practice grading, using slabbed coins, photograde, and similar sites. I have also been doing comparisons of details graded coins, (especially cleaned) to regular slabbed coins to hone my own skill in detecting these prior to buying raw if I go that route. I even bought a few slabbed, cleaned coins, ones where I really couldn't tell by the photos to study in hand.

You seem to be taking the right steps for success. I applaud you. For your collecting interests, I would say go with Rich Uhrich and Jack Beymer. I have dealt with both and had only pleasant transactions. They tend to price on the high end of retail, but the coins are quality. Rich does not question the TPG grades, so you can cherrypick some very nice coins that are undergraded. I'm sure there are other dealers that specialize in the early halves, but I have not dealt with them.
