I just got an uncirculated 1885-OPL Morgan dollar. It is a beautiful example of a PL in my opinion...however sometime in its life someone got fingerprints on both sides. These are VERY distracting on this coin and I think will affect grade. Can these be removed without affecting grade or quality of mirrored surface under them? Thanks...Mont.

An acetone bath might remove a bit of the haze, but unfortunately the fingerprints are probably there for good. Maybe someone else can suggest something.

Finger prints Might be removed if you get to it ASAP,days maybe weeks when they were first put on the coin. Most times they are Forever. Maybe a pro like NGC or PCGS could Conserve a valuable coin. John1

Yeah, acetone won't do a thing but try it first just to be sure. An ezest dip is the only thing that may improve it depending in how much they have etched into the surface. They won't effect the grade, just like toning, but they do effect eye appeal, just like toning. But with toning it can be good. Fingerprints can never really add eye appeal

Fingerprints are common on PL and DMPL coins. I have one with a fingerprint with a CAC sticker. My guess is that the fingerprints can not be removed without damaging the mirror surface.

Don't touch it! Don't soak it. If you don't like it, sell it.
98% of the time, these types of marks do not come off w/o leaving "evidence." Wink, wink.

I try to avoid fingerprint coins now. The fingerprint etches into the surface and never comes off. A dip might take it off I suppose but I've never tried that.

Anything that will remove old fingerprints will also etch the surfaces.

That's the point of a dip, take a layer of surface off.

If you found out that the fingerprints are from Roosevelt, would that change your mind about 'cleaning' them?

....my wife suggested we send coin in to her Navy buddies and see if they could fingerprint it. She used to be an SP in the Navy.

Most often fingerprints cannot be removed except when they are very fresh. I would not go beyond acetone with this coin.
