Use it as a diagnostic to attribute the variety. Any added value is dependent on the die variety.
Rest in Peace

It will help verify the variety which will add value to the coin if the variety can be established.

Yes it is a die crack. It isn't diagnostic for the variety though as it doesn't appear until Die Stage V. I can't tell if it has progressed to Stage VII. There is a second crack through the E in STATES but it isn't as visible on you coin. It shows up on Die Stage II so it is seen on almost all examples of the variety. The diagnostic feature, a die flaw though the left side of the O in OF is present but not easily visible due to the condition of the coin.

Looks like it could be this S-26 ....

The die crack makes the S look like a $ sign.

Does it make the coin rarer?

No S-26 is a pretty common variety for 1794.

There is a second variety of 1794 that has a very similar die crack through the S, S-32. The 32 isn't a particularly scarce variety either. Quick way to tell S-26 and S-32 apart are the berries below the M. S-26 has two berries, one inside and one outside the wreath, S-32 has one outside the wreath.

This is a late die stage S-32 showing the crack very well and the single berry below the M. (There are other differences too.)
